A Virtual Museum dedicated to the Art of Signs.
In 1953, Mario Santoro and his brother
Rocco Santoro rented a small sign shop on East Delevan Avenue in
Buffalo NY. Their business grew over the years and today, Santoro Signs still manufactures, installs, and repairs signs for local businesses from their shop on Genesee Street in Cheektowaga NY.
On October 17, 2008, Mario Santoro passed away. He may be gone but his legacy is still alive through the business signs you see in Buffalo everyday.
Signs of Buffalo is a collection of his work. Signs to Mario were always more than letters and numbers, they were handcrafted pieces of art that helped shape the American dream of building a business in Western New York. In his day, sign lettering was performed by the skillful hand of the sign painter. Besides being a gifted sign letterer, Mario was a metal fabricating craftsman and a talented painter who could transform a blank sheet of metal in to a beautiful work of art.
Check out this collection of some of his work in the photo gallery below. There are over one hundred photo's from the 1950's and 1960's.
